Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a returns policy and a refund policy? â–¼
A returns policy covers the process for sending items back — timeframe, conditions, and who pays for return shipping. A refund policy covers what happens after the return is received — whether the customer gets their money back, store credit, or a replacement. Many Shopify stores combine both into one document. Shopify has separate fields for each under Settings → Policies.
How many days should my return window be? â–¼
30 days is the most common return window for ecommerce stores and the minimum expected by most customers. Some stores offer 60 or 90 days to be more competitive. In the EU, customers have a legal right to return items within 14 days for any reason — so if you sell to EU customers, your policy must cover at least 14 days.
Who should pay for return shipping? â–¼
This is up to you. Offering free returns increases conversions but adds cost. Charging for return shipping is more common for lower-margin products. A middle ground is to offer free returns only when the item arrived damaged or was the wrong product, and charge for returns due to buyer's remorse. Whatever you decide, state it clearly in your policy.
Where do I add the returns policy in Shopify? â–¼
Go to Settings → Policies in your Shopify admin. You will find a dedicated Return policy field. Paste your generated policy there and save. Shopify automatically links it at checkout and in the footer.
