Yes, but mostly through trust, not magic. Research on online reviews links a handful of recent reviews to a much higher chance of purchase, and most shoppers check Google before buying from a business they don't know. Google reviews help a Shopify store convert when there are enough of them, they are recent, and shoppers can see them on the pages where they decide.
What the research says about reviews and conversions
There is no public study that measures Google reviews on Shopify stores specifically. The best evidence comes from research on online reviews in general and on how shoppers use Google reviews.
| Finding | Number | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase likelihood for a product with five reviews compared with none | 270% higher | Spiegel Research Center, 2017 |
| Conversion lift from reviews for a higher-priced product | 380% | Spiegel Research Center, 2017 |
| Rating range where purchase likelihood peaks | 4.0 to 4.7 stars | Spiegel Research Center, 2017 |
| Consumers who read reviews for local businesses | 97% | BrightLocal, Feb 2026 |
| Consumers who use Google to read reviews | 71% | BrightLocal, Feb 2026 |
| Consumers who won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews | 47% | BrightLocal, Feb 2026 |
| Consumers who only care about reviews from the last three months | 74% | BrightLocal, Feb 2026 |
| Consumers who visit a business's website after reading positive reviews | 54% | BrightLocal, Feb 2026 |
Two takeaways matter most for a store owner. First, the jump comes from the first few reviews, so a store with zero visible reviews loses the most. Second, a perfect 5.0 is not the goal: shoppers trust a 4.6 with recent, detailed reviews more than a flawless score with no context.
Where Google reviews affect your Shopify sales
Google reviews work at three points of the buying journey, and each one needs something different.
| Stage | Where shoppers see Google reviews | What decides the effect |
|---|---|---|
| Before the visit | Google Search, Google Maps, your Business Profile | Star rating, review count, how recent the last reviews are |
| Ads and Shopping | Store ratings next to Google ads and free listings | Enough eligible reviews from the last 24 months |
| On your store | A reviews widget on the homepage, product pages or cart | Placement near the buying decision and up-to-date reviews |
For ads, Google reports that store ratings on text ads lift click-through rate by 2% on average on the Search network. A store rating needs a 3.5 rating or higher on text ads, and most merchants get one after collecting about 100 eligible reviews (Google Ads Help, checked October 2026). Reviews collected through Google Customer Reviews count toward it.
Five things that make Google reviews convert better
- Get past 20 reviews. Almost half of shoppers skip businesses below that number. If you are under it, start with automatic review requests after each order. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews covers the methods.
- Keep reviews fresh. Three quarters of shoppers only look at the last three months. A widget that syncs once a week or needs a manual refresh shows stale reviews. The Reputon Google Reviews app syncs new reviews every 24 hours.
- Show them where people decide. A carousel on the homepage builds first trust. A compact badge or rating near the Add to cart button answers doubt at the moment of purchase.
- Don't chase a perfect 5.0. Purchase likelihood peaks between 4.0 and 4.7 stars. Reply to critical reviews instead of worrying about them: a calm, specific reply often reassures the next shopper more than another 5-star review.
- Add verified buyer signals. Google Customer Reviews collects reviews from real buyers after checkout and feeds store ratings in Google Shopping. In the Reputon app the opt-in works on any Shopify plan.
Results from Shopify stores that grew their Google reviews
These stores used Reputon Customer Reviews to ask for Google reviews and showed them with the Google Reviews widget. The figures below are review growth reported in our Google case studies, not conversion data.
| Store | Google reviews | Rating | Period |
|---|---|---|---|
| One Thief Surplus LLC | 12 to 271 | 5.0 kept | 12 months |
| Southern Sugar Bakery | 25 to 171 | 4.6 to 4.9 | 3 months |
| Beyond the Blackboard | 60 to 99 | 3.9 to 4.7 | 2 months |
| BERTSCHAT | 401 to 2,066 | 4.8 | +34% per month on average |
The pattern is the same in each case: more requests brought more recent reviews, and the rating went up or stayed high. That is the part of the research shoppers react to.
How to measure the effect on your own store
The only reliable answer for your store is your own data. A simple before and after check takes about a month.
- Write down your store conversion rate and add to cart rate in Shopify Analytics for the last 28 days.
- Add the Google reviews widget to the homepage and product pages. Change nothing else on the store for the test period, if you can.
- After 28 days, compare the same metrics. Look at new visitors separately: they are the ones who need social proof.
- If the store has enough traffic, run an A/B test with a theme testing app instead. It removes the effect of seasons and campaigns.
